What is the difference between yoga pants and compression tights?
One of the first things that may come to mind is that there really is no difference as both types of clothing are very tight and form fitting. While that is true, there are some basic differences that go beyond just the look of the pants.
Compression is actually a technical term for garments that provide “graduated” levels of compression: more compression the further away from the heart. This type of compression improves blood circulation, increase oxygenation, support muscle movement and reduce muscle vibration. Originally, compression wear had medical applications — they were used to alleviate the symptoms and issues surrounding venous conditions including varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis. Compression gear migrated from medical to athletics due to the fact that one of the main benefits of compression gear is the increased circulation. Compression gear can reduce the possibility of soreness and swelling through the higher circulation rate. The reduction of recovery time is important to athletes, along with the overall performance enhancing traits.
So, what is the difference between yoga pants and compression tights? Yoga pants do not provide the “graduated” compression that gives wearers those benefits of increased circulation. Essentially, you can wear compression tights instead of yoga pants to get the many benefits of compression and still have the freedom of movement needed for yoga.
